Dr. Willie Jennings, Duke Divinity School

Dr. Willie James Jennings is currently Associate Professor of Theology and Black Church Studies at Duke University Divinity School. For many years, Dr. Jennings served as the Academic Dean of the Divinity School. 

Dr. Jennings was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Dr. Jennings received his B.A. in Religion and Theological Studies from Calvin College (1984), his M.Div. (Master of Divinity degree) from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena California, and his Ph.D. degree from Duke University. The author of numerous articles, Dr. Jennings’s most recent work is The Christian Imagination: Theology and the Origins of Race published by Yale University Press, winner of the 2011 American Academy of Religion award for best book. He currently working on a book on the problem of obedience for Christians. 

Dr. Jennings also serves along with his wife, the Reverend Joanne L. Browne Jennings as an associate minister at the Mount Level Baptist Church in Durham, North Carolina. For many years, Dr. Jennings served along with Rev. Joanne Jennings as interim pastors for several churches in North Carolina and they are the parents of two wonderful daughters, Njeri and Safiya Jennings.
