Session Four: Mitt Romney and Red State ReligionTuesday, October 23, 2012 - 6:30pmAlthough former Governor Romney is a Mormon, his political
language also echoes deeply engrained themes in the broader religious history
of the United States. He just taps into aspects of that heritage that are
different from the ones that Obama highlights. Romney, in spite of evangelical
suspicions, has presented himself as the high priest of red state civil
religion. We shall examine the religious themes that pervade Romney’s campaign,
including the acute suspicion of centralized power, the value of
self-responsibility, and a sense of the precarious nature of individual
freedom.
